Ukrainian drones again targeted the Moscow region early on Monday, Russian officials said. Two drones briefly suspended flights at two airports in the capital, amid an intensifying campaign apparently aimed at bringing the war home to Russia. But the regional governor, Andrey Vorobyov, said later that two people were injured when falling debris from a drone hit a cottage, Tass reported. On Friday, Russian officials said that a Ukrainian drone hit Moscow’s financial center and damaged a building. Ukraine’s drone attacks within Russia have caused relatively minor damage and few casualties, especially in comparison with Moscow’s deadly missile strikes and drone attacks in Ukraine.

CNN —Russia temporarily shuttered all four major Moscow airports early on Friday morning following an alleged drone strike on the capital city, its civil aviation authority said. Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin said Friday that Russian air defenses shot down a drone over the capital city overnight. The incident on Friday was the third time in the past month that this district of Moscow has been struck by drone debris. “The Kiev regime launched another terrorist attack using a drone against facilities in Moscow and Moscow region on August 18 at 4:00 Moscow time,” the ministry said in a statement, using the Russian spelling of the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv. Last month, Kyiv said Ukrainian forces carried out a drone strike in Moscow and warned more strikes were to come.

The Russian Defense Ministry said on Sunday that Ukrainian forces had fired at least three drones at Moscow, the latest in a wave of attacks in Russia demonstrating that few places are off limits after more than 17 months of war. One drone was destroyed in Odintsovo, outside Moscow, the Defense Ministry said, adding that two others struck commercial buildings in the capital after being intercepted by Russian air defenses. Ukraine does not typically claim responsibility for attacks in Russia, in an effort to maintain a military advantage and an element of surprise. However, senior Ukrainian officials said last week that recent drone attacks on Moscow were orchestrated by Kyiv. A few hours after Sunday’s attack, a Ukrainian Air Force spokesman released a statement that neither accepted nor denied responsibility.

Ukraine does not comment on attacks inside Russia that could be attributed to them, seeking to maintain secrecy and the element of surprise. Ukraine has also been accused of hitting military air bases deep inside Russia and oil facilities with drone attacks. They were followed by more at the end of that month in a high-end Moscow neighborhood.

The Russian forces are led by Yevgeny Prigozhin, a billionaire and former close ally of Putin. Prigozhin's defiant march toward Moscow was the culmination of a months-long feud with top Russian military leaders. Prigozhin had for years been a close ally of the Russian president, dubbed "Putin's chef" after growing wealthy from state catering contracts. With much of the Russian military bogged down in Ukraine, however, few security forces have been left to challenge Wagner directly. According to videos and photos shared on social media, Wagner forces were also in possession of advanced air defense equipment, limiting the Kremlin's ability to attack them from the sky.

Russia's military is still struggling with a number of problems on the frontlines in Ukraine. As a result, some Russian cities have canceled or scaled down their New Year's celebrations. Moscow is still holding a New Year celebration — but it will not include fireworks, its mayor said. In Moscow, Mayor Sergey Sobyanin said the capital would hold a toned-down celebration, forgoing the usual firework show and mass concert. Some Russian activists last week accused him of spending billions on Russia's military while many of them freeze back home, The Daily Beast reported.
